The University of Glasgow gained the formula student championship for 2022 at Silverstone

The University of Glasgow has won Formula Student 2022, beating dozens of teams of young engineers at the Silverstone event.

Glasgow Racing is the first team from Scotland to win the competition, with local rival Edinburgh University winning the autonomous car event, which is rapidly growing in popularity.

Runners up in the main event were the University of West of England in second place and University of Malta in third place.

Commenting on the event, Andrew Deakin, Formula Student Committee Chairman said, “Unusually for Silverstone, the weather was kind and while the only record we’ve seen broken is the temperature at a Formula Student event, it’s been great to see so many teams come back after COVID-19.”

The biggest event of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ calendar and the most established educational engineering event in Europe, Formula Student challenges teams of university students to design, manufacture and run a single-seater racing car. These culminate in the finals held at Silverstone, which combine formal presentations of their work throughout the year with a range of on-track events that demonstrate the capabilities of their car.

The 2022 competition also saw record numbers of FS-AI participants, with more than a dozen teams from the UK and overseas taking part in presentation events of their work and on-track activities designed to test their team’s autonomous driving systems across a number of real-world driving simulations.
