New EMC instrument for test houses provides greater emitted frequency measurement capability.
Keysight Technologies has extended the frequency range of the company’s N9048B PXE Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Receiver from 26.5 to 44 GHz enabling customers to meet current and emerging compliance testing requirements according to various standards bodies, including MIL-STD-461G and FCC Part 15.
Both of these are American standards, one being the military standard and the other relating to the Federal Communications Commission. Both standards are widely adopted both within and outside military applications and not confined to the USA. Comparable UK and European Union standards as well as the International Electrotechnical Commission’s CISPR (International Special Committee on Radio Interference) technical standards such as CISPR 16 are catered for in the increased frequency range offered by the new Keysight equipment.
Automotive and 5G applications
The cellular (5G) and automotive industries need to make use of higher frequencies to deliver new applications requiring increased spectrum resources to carry large amounts of data at faster speeds.
The automotive industry is placing greater demand on EMC testing capabilities as the RF environment of vehicles becomes more crowded and complex. The effective functioning of advanced safety features in vehicles as well as autonomous control require high speed, low latency communications and 5G is widely seen as the pivotal technological element that will enable the full development of the Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) of the future.
These higher frequency applications must meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance testing and commercial application requirements before they can be brought to market. EMI receivers measure unwanted emissions at high frequencies generated by a device under test (DUT).
According to Joe Rickert, vice president and general manager of high frequency measurement R&D for Keysight’s communications systems group, the PXE receiver provides users in these demanding industries with the capability of performing the higher frequency tests that they need.
