PXS24 electronic circuit breaker

An electronic circuit breaker has been developed to provide overload protection with fast shut off on industrial control systems.

Eaton has launched a new PXS24 electronic circuit breaker offering selective overload protection for 24 V DC control circuits. The multi-function module enables machine and installation contractors to significantly increase the reliability of their systems and covers a rated current range up to 16 A.

Conventional line circuit breakers have many advantages but are only suitable in certain circumstances for protecting 24 V DC circuits. However, electronic products, such as the PXS24, offer improved protection because they can quickly recognise an overload and selectively switch off faulty machine components. As a result, the system remains controllable, meaning that errors can be bypassed and critical damage prevented. If required, the system can also be shut down in a controlled manner. Even capacitive loads of up to 20,000 μF do not pose a challenge, as the module will supply and reliably protect them in a controlled manner.

To enable professional system monitoring and visualisation, each PXS24 has its own control inputs and outputs that can be connected to a PLC. This makes it easier to locate the sources of errors and to correct problems. The PXS24’s channels can also be easily linked to each other in order to generate grouped messages, or to set and turn off several channels in the event of a fault.

In contrast to conventional electronic fuses on the market, the PXS24 offers more functionality than just selective shutdown. “With the PXS24 electronic circuit breaker, our aim was to supply customers with clear added value. This is why we’ve incorporated additional functions into the PXS and significantly reduced space requirements, as well as reducing the equipment and time required for installation,” said Chris Pack, Field Product Manager at Eaton UK. “We’re aware that the most expensive factor during installation and maintenance is usually working time. That’s why it was important for us to enable installers, switchboard builders and electricians to work faster and more efficiently.”

One example of this is the wiring. In contrast to conventional installation methods, where a separate clamping block for distribution to the load is located behind the fuse output, the PXS24 has six integrated potential distribution terminals for direct connection of up to three loads. This eliminates the need for complicated, fault prone wiring, while reducing the amount of space required. Costs and installation space are also saved by the incorporation of signalling contacts, controls and switching functions. Specifically, the PXS24 requires only 1 TE, whereas fuses with auxiliary contacts require at least 1.5 TE. “With the PXS24, the fuse becomes a switch,” Pack explains. “Although no safety or time related switching operations can be carried out via our module, the coupling relay level can be replaced or significantly reduced by means of the PXS24.”
