TRL comments on the release of the latest electric bicycle and the likely increase in the popularity of this for commuter transport.
With the introduction of the latest fashionable Stromer ST2 S, which was recently announced, it’s likely that this mode of transport could prove to be popular amongst London commuters. The Stromer models differs from other electrically assisted bikes due to its modern style and hidden electrical equipment, making it look more like a standard bicycle than other similar models.
Although the Stromer has a price tag that is similar to a scooter or small motorcycle, it’s nonetheless predicted to be a hot seller amongst the commuter community that is looking for a viable alternative to the car or crowded underground or surface rail transport.
Adding to the viability of the Stromer as daily transport is the impressive hundred-mile range on a single charge and energy saving features such as regenerative braking, which uses the bike’s brake energy to recharge the battery.
According to the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), these bikes, often referred to as “pedelecs”, enable the rider to vary the amount of assistance required by decided when and if to pedal and how much pedalling force to apply – the harder you pedal, the less electrical assistance is needed.
Commenting on the growth in popularity in Europe of pedelecs, the TRL’s Dr Sally Cairns noted that the rapid growth in popularity is coming in spite of EU regulations that place limits on the power and speed of such vehicles.
“Over 25,000 were bought last year in the UK compared to 14,500 electric cars and more could be seen on UK roads in 2016 due to a variety of European measures that are being introduced in order to encourage their take-up,” Dr Cairns said.
